ESS Travel Grants: CALL 2026
The European Society of Sonochemistry supports travel grants for young researchers (MSc-student, PhD-student, post-doc with max. 3 years seniority) for a short research visit to another academic lab. The present call opens June 29th 2026 and closes August 15th 2026. The research visit should be completed by end of June 2027. To apply, send the completed document by e-mail to the ESS chairman before the call closure.
The grant includes:
- Travel to and from the location of the research visit, as well as accommodation cost at the destination. Costs can be refunded with a maximum of 800 euro, upon proof with invoices to be sent to the ESS treasurer.
- Waiving of the Author Publication Cost (APC) when the results are submitted in a manuscript to Ultrasonics Sonochemistry; the manuscript has to be accepted before the end of 2027.
The criteria on which the submitted files are evaluated by the ESS Board* are:
- Technical quality of the project (scientific and societal impacts, creation of knowledge, etc.).
- ESS membership of sending and receiving promoters (valid at time of submission).
* ESS Board members that are affiliated to the sending or receiving institution of any of the applications have conflict of interest and are excluded of the entire evaluation for that call.

New ESS activities ahead
With the ESS19 Conference behind us, we are now looking ahead. The next ESS Conference (ESS20) will be held in 2028 in Mondello, Italy, while the conference after that, ESS21, will be held in 2030 in Glasgow, UK.
Besides conferences, ESS is also organizing Summer Schools for young researchers to get a kickstart in ultrasound science, including hands-on experience. Summer Schools are organized in the uneven years, the next one in Jena in 2027, and the one after that in Oxford in 2029. Besides those events, ESS also launches calls for annual mobility grants. Keep an eye on the ESS website for news on these calls forthcoming soon.
ESS19 – poster presentations awards
At ESS19 three poster presentations were awarded:
- V. Fabbrizio, E. Falletta and C.L. Bianchi – Exploring the potential of ultrasound in hydrogen production from organic-contaminated water
- A. Thomson, V. Diniz, P. Sears, C. Avignone Rossa and M. Bussemaker – Sonolysis for Sustainable PFAS Treatment: A Focus on 6:2 FTAB Degradation
- M. Radpour, E. Brozzi and S. Kuhn – Synthesis of PLGA Nanoparticles via Ultrasound-Assisted Double Emulsion in Microfluidic reactors for Hydrophilic Drug Delivery

Alfred L. Loomis Award – Giancarlo Cravotto
The 4th Alfred L. Loomis Award was awarded to Giancarlo Cravotto for his continuing dedication to the sonochemistry community
Giancarlo Cravotto is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Drug Science and Technology in the University of Turin, Italy. Giancarlo’s research activity in the domain of green organic synthesis and processing, is documented by 630 peer-reviewed scientific papers (H index 90 with over 35,800 citations by Google Scholar; H index 77 with 26,800 citations by Scopus), 24 patents, 57 book chapters and 7 books as editor, and more than 600 communications to scientific meetings, including several invited plenary and keynote lectures. The extraction, purification, synthesis and chemical modification of bioactive natural products has been the focus of his research activity. These studies have paved the way for new, non-conventional energy source driven synthetic procedures (ultrasound, hydrodynamic cavitation, microwaves, mechanochemistry, reactive extruders, flow chemistry, etc.), while also prompting the development of innovative hybrid reactors.
Besides his scientific contribution, Giancarlo served as ESS President between 2012 and 2018, is member of the Italian Chemical Society and the American Chemical Society, and has several editorial board roles in scientific journals.
ESS Conference
The 19th ESS Conferences (ESS19) was held in Chania, Crete, from 25 to 29 May 2026. The conferences had 75 registrations, 68 oral presentations and 11 posters. We discussed advances in sonochemistry fundamentals and sonoprocessing as well as applications in environment and materials synthesis. This was combined with a great and relaxed atmosphere, enjoying Cretan culture, food and climate. Many thanks to Christos Argirusis and his team for the organization.
ESS18 Special Issue published in Ultrasonics Sonochemistry
The Special Issue containing 16 selected contributions from the ESS18 conference (Leuven, May 2024) has been published in Elsevier’s Ultrasonics Sonochemistry.
Ken Suslick elected as Honorary Member
Prof. Ken Suslick has been elected as ESS Honorary Member by the ESS Board.
Congratulations to Ken!
There is no doubt on the huge impact that Ken has had and still has on sonochemistry advances. He joins other sonochemistry founding fathers in the Honorary Board.

Ultrasonics Sonochemistry – Special Issue
A new Special Issue is announced in Elsevier’s Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, entitled “Advances in Ultrasound-Assisted Minerals & Metallurgical Processing”. Guest Editors are Xiangning Bu, Tom Van Gerven and Libo Zhang. The submission deadline is September 1, 2026.

French National Congress on Ultrasound and Sonochemistry
The French National Congress on Ultrasound and Sonochemistry, organized by the French National Network Cavitation will take place from July 7 till 9, 2026, in Grenoble,. The conference is open to all French-speaking researchers, companies, students, etc. willing to participate or to make an oral presentation.

Ultrasonics Sonochemistry – Special Issue
A new Special Issue is announced in Elsevier’s Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, entitled “How do Intrabubble Conditions Influence Sonochemical Reactivity? (VSI: Cavitation Bubbles and Sonochemical Activity)”. Guest Editors are Sergey I. Nikitenko, Rachel R. Pflieger and Glyus L. Sharipov. The submission deadline is September 10, 2025.
2025 ESS Mobility Award Winners!
Three postdoctoral researchers have been awarded the 2025 ESS Mobility Award:

AOSS 6 conference, 3-5 December 2025, Kawasaki, Japan
The 6th Meeting of the Asia-Oceania Sonochemical Society (AOSS-6, 2025) in conjunction with the 34th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Sonochemistry (JSS) will be held from 3 till 5 December 2025 in Kawasaki, Japan. Applications for the presentation are now being received here, and the deadline is August 18. JSS gives a Young Researcher Award to young researchers and students for their presentations at the annual meeting held every year. This year’s AOSS 6 will be jointly hosted with the JSS Annual Meeting, and we would like to give the Young Researcher Award selection as part of the JSS. Of course, presentations from international participants will also be included in the consideration for the Award.

- Waiving of the registration fee for the next ESS meeting in 2026 (Athens, Greece), where the results of the research visit are expected to be presented.
- Waiving of the Author Publication Cost (APC) when the results are submitted in a manuscript to Ultrasonics Sonochemistry; the manuscript has to be accepted before the end of 2026.
The criteria on which the submitted files are evaluated by the ESS Board are:
- Technical quality of the project (scientific and societal impacts, creation of knowledge, etc.).
- Sending and receiving institutions must both include an ESS member.
